Festival of Owls pre-registration required for some events
Owl contest is a hoot

The Festival of Owls is looking for kids (high school or younger) to participate in an owl calling contest on Saturday, March 3, at 3 p.m. at Houston High School. Each entrant must imitate at least one North American owl call, but bonus points will be given if more than one owl is imitated.

Calls will be judged by a panel of experts (Festival of Owls presenters) based on rhythm and voice quality. The top three callers will receive medals and field guides, and all entrants will receive a nicely wrapped, sterilized participation pellet, courtesy of Alice the Great Horned Owl.

Owl vocalizations can be found at www.owlpages.com in the "Owl Sounds Gallery" or at www.owling.com. Most bird CDs also include owl calls, but the ultimate owl CD is "Voices of North American Owls" by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, containing the nearly complete vocal repertoire of all North American owl species.

Want to fill your belly with authentic German food and learn about the amazing diversity of owls in Central America while digesting?  Or eat owl-shaped pizzas and learn about forestry from Woodsy Owl?  If so, now's the time to register!

Pre-registration is required if you'd like to attend either of these programs and several others.  Additional programs that require advanced registration include: building an owl nest box, owl pellet dissection, and banquet and keynote speaker.

Carrol Henderson, Minnesota's Non-game Wildlife Supervisor, author, speaker, photographer, and birding tour leader will be presenting the Central American owl program on Sunday, Mar. 4. Over 30 species of owls, some familiar, some funky, inhabit this region, and as an experienced guide, who better than Carrol to introduce us to these species?  This program is paired with the German cooking abilities of Rosie Buege.

"Woodworking for Wildlife" is one of Carrol Henderson's many popular books, and he will be assisting Mike Furr of Coon Valley, WI to lead the owl nest box building class Sunday morning.

After a main course of owl-shaped pizza, Woodsy Owl, with much help from Forester Jon Sobiech, will be teaching a class on forestry and what kids can do to help the environment, also on Sunday.  Jon is an enthusiastic presenter, so the class is sure to be fun for kids of all ages.

If you've never done the infamous owl pellet dissection, now's your chance on Saturday or Sunday.  Not only will you get to dissect an owl pellet with guidance, you'll find out more than you ever wanted to know about how the owl digestive system works and the gory details of how those pellets are made, courtesy of Laura Erickson.  And no, pellets aren't poop!  They're puke, thank you very much.  Laura studied under bird digestion expert Gary Duke, is an author, staff ornithologist for binoculars.com, and producer of "For the Birds" radio show.  She isn't called the "Garrison Keillor of Birds" for nothing.

Most programs on Saturday do not require pre-registration, and the program on owls in Jamaican culture on Sunday also does not require pre-registration.  But if you want to get in on the excellent programs highlighted above, be sure to get your registration form in soon!

More information, prices, and pre-registration forms can be found at www.houstonmn.com/owlfest.htm, or contact the Houston Nature Center at 507-896-HOOT (4668) or nature@acegroup.cc.
